JHRTS News & Updates: September 2013

JHRTS Speed Networking pic4JHRTS ended the month of August with a hint of business affairs. On Tuesday, August 27 members welcomed Howard Davine, EVP of Business Affairs at ABC Studios, to a round table conversation. With over 30 members in attendance, the group got an inside look at the slate of programs ABC Studios has produced over the years. The conversation delved into the challenges faced by the studio as well as its many successes in the last several years. Among some of the topics discussed were: co-productions and the decision-making process on taking lead, producing for cable versus broadcast, and the studio’s strategic and innovative deals such as the move of popular hit TV show, Cougar Town, to Turner (TBS). A resounding theme throughout conversation was the idea of the studio being as attractive as possible to creative talent. Davine explored this theme by tackling topics ranging from creative development to digital distribution and new media platforms.

On September 12th, the JHRTS Speed Networking Event proved to be quite the success! With over 200 people in attendance, the night was filled with socializing, casual mingling, and oh so much networking! Following the traditional rules of speed events, tables were set-up with sections reading “Red” or “Blue.” Upon arrival, each attendee was given a corresponding blue or red sticker, which was displayed on their name tags. Blue represented the “Floaters,” the group of people who would move from person to person at each table; the red group remained stationary. Three minutes were allotted for each “networking session.” Once the three minutes were up, the blue group moved to the left, and the next networking round began. With a fun casualness to the whole affair, people were also given the option to mingle with others away from the designated networking area, and especially for the red group, to stretch their legs or grab a drink at the bar! At almost every corner of the room you could spot groups of people interacting with each other. By the end of the night, contacts were made, business cards were exchanged, and plans for the next speed networking event were set into motion.
