Greg Lipstone

Greg Lipstone is Head of International Television and Media at International Creative Management and an HRTS Board Member. I recently had a chance to interview Greg to discuss Paramount, global business, and THAT’S INCREDIBLE.

Q: Can you tell us about your background and what made you want to work in entertainment? How did you get involved with the HRTS?
-I was fortunate to grow up in the entertainment business. My grandfather, Louis Lipstone, was the General Musical Director at Paramount Pictures, and my father was first an executive at ABC Television and for the last 40 years a partner with Alan Landsburg in The Landsburg Company. I would spend summer vacations and holidays working as an associate producer for my father on such pioneering reality programs as THAT’S INCREDIBLE. After graduation from the University of California, I followed in his footsteps as the 3rd generation in the entertainment business. My career began in the William Morris mailroom, and subsequently I was promoted to agent and Senior Vice President. After 21 years with William Morris, I joined International Creative Management as a Senior Vice President and Head of International Television and Media.

I‘ve attended HRTS luncheons for many years and have always been impressed with the level and quality of their programs. When Chris Silbermann (ICM’s President) offered me the opportunity to join the board, I jumped at the chance.

Q: How has agenting changed since you began?
-in the late 1980s, there were significantly fewer television outlets, most with traditional formats. Gradually, the marketplace expanded with cable television to include opportunities for novel and innovative original programming.  Simultaneously, the established broadcast networks began to recognize the viability of reality and non-fiction programming. They became open to international formats, and relying on the proven track record of these programs, were gradually willing to take more risks.

Q: What do you look for when considering a potential client?
-unquestionably, growth, brand, and viability. We are about building businesses and brands.

Q: As a member of ICM leadership team, what is your vision? where would you like to be five years from now?
-we are in a global business and we need to evolve with the ever-changing environment. In order to stay on top, we must continue to unearth innovative ways to develop source material and expand existing distribution opportunities. As I look beyond, I see a business model that moves towards a one world, one business culture.
